Supervision with Jocelyn Skillman LMHC, MHP, CMHS
I currently offer Clinical Supervision to counseling interns and associates who serve at Salveo Center.
Background & Scope of Competence: I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State with my full Child Mental Health Specialization and Mental Health Practitioner licensure. I graduated with my Masters in Counseling Psychology in 2013 from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology where I learned and practiced counseling that emphasizes client-centered, trauma-informed, interpersonal & relational psychotherapeutic interventions, attachment formation/family of origin work, and the integration of a range of intersectional spirituality as desired by clients. My work history includes provision of outpatient mental health services to individuals of all ages, couples, youth, and families in community mental health agencies: Valley Cities, Vashon Youth & Family Services, Samaritan Center of Puget Sound. I provided outpatient mental health service as a sole-proprietor, private practitioner from 2016-2020. I supported teens as a drop-in & milieu counselor at The Garage Teen Cafe (2022-2023) where I helped launch their on-site mental health care program. I specialize in interpersonal/relational, existential, and psychodynamic theories of counseling. I integrate mindfulness-based, somatic, trauma-informed, and neuroscientific psychoeducation into my practice. I approach counseling with a careful eye to practitioner humility and heightened attunement to broader systemic issues, injustice, and inequity. Supervision Style: Though we may discuss personal factors that impact your professional development or work as a counselor, our supervision work will take an intentionally different shape than a counselor-client relationship – referrals will be provided for any of your acute counseling needs. We will talk honestly about what it’s like for you to hold space for your clients – please bring your full range of experience and needs into our work together – I will intentionally guide us to explore and grow in our core counseling competency domains while integrating attunement to what arises in you as you work in this complex and demanding role.
My supervision work spotlights:
(1) Relational attunement and relational alliance – developing reflective practices and metacognition — approaching therapeutic care as a spiritual practice.
(2) Distress Tolerance and improving empathic slowing
(3) Expanding our capacity to hold multiplicity and the unknown
(4) We will develop our awareness, critical engagement, and attunement to systemic forces (cultural/societal) that impact mental health
(5) Protecting your vitality and own mental health – supporting your longevity and sustained capacity to do this beautiful and challenging work!
Supervisory Methods: Supervision is held in individual (1) and joint/triadic (2). My supervision is offered through telehealth. Supervision sessions will be used to focus on processing self of therapist concerns, addressing areas of anxiety and client care concerns, provision of direct and personalized feedback, reviewing progress notes, completing and reviewing evaluations, and providing support and curiosity – a space to hold our anxiety as practitioners and to grow and stretch developmentally in our profession. I will help trainees learn ways to apply interventions, to strengthen treatment planning, to reinforce systems approaches, and to review and discuss ethical and legal considerations.
